Downstage Successfully Transition Leadership

When Downstage approached Propellus to support them in their leadership transition, they had operated for fifteen years with their founder leading the charge.  Their mandate is to produce Canadian theatre that sparks meaningful conversation around social issues. When the founder decided to retire, Downstage decided to be proactive about the transition, and engage support to develop a transition strategy, work plan and a strategic framework.

“This work has allowed us to look ahead at what the vision is for Downstage and have a narrow, short-term focus.”

Initially, the group were hesitant that they were ready for such a major transition, yet going through the process with consultant, Heidi, they found that their readiness was actually more robust than they’d given themselves credit for.

Not only was the framework that they co-created with Heidi useful in the moment, but the board have referred back to the framework consistently since its creation, and it’s become a guiding document.

What’s next for Downstage? They’re in the process of hiring their new ED, have a skilled team member on contract for the interim transition, and will begin testing out new and exciting elements of their strategic framework that will guide the future of their organization. We couldn’t be more excited for them.
